Overview[]
Lucky was a competitor first making its entrance RoboGames 2018. It was a four-wheel drive machine armed with an extremely powerful 4-bar launcher that it used to throw its opponents.
Lucky wasn't as successful as its well-known predecessor Ziggy, but managed to be of competence and put up an upstanding fight in each of it's matches. It also managed to gain some impressive wins against notable opponents such as Sewer Snake, of whom has the second most Heavyweight Gold Medals behind Original Sin , who Lucky also fought against. Furthermore, Lucky bested HexaDecimator in a test of flips and all it took to come out on top of Cataclysm who was pummeling Lucky into oblivion was one "lucky flip" that high-centered Cataclysm against the rails. Lucky also came across an extremely close and "unlucky" decision against the powerful drum spinner, Touro Maximus.
Lucky also appeared in BattleBots 2016, 2018 and 2019, having far less success as its RoboGames counterpart due to numerous issues associated with coming in at a very short notice.
Lucky returned for RoboGames 2023, this time under the name Ziggy Jr., continuing the legacy of CM Robotics' superheavyweight Ziggy after Son of Ziggy, the purpose-built downscaled version of the 340lb robot, was retired in 2013.
Ziggy Jr. defeated Whomper, essentially a revised Whiplash, in Round 1, before beating fellow Canadian Kurtis Wanner and Crash n' Burn in the second round by a 20-13 judges' decision. It then lost to Cataclysm in a rematch from the 2018 event, but redeemed itself with a win over one of the competition's most successful robots, Original Sin.
Robot History[]
RoboGames 2018[]
Lucky’s first match in Robogames was against former BattleBots semi-finalist HexaDecimator. At first both robots just felt each other out and some sparks flew at one point before Lucky flipped HexaDecimator over near the wall. HexaDecimator struggled to self-right and despite eventually doing so, it was already counted out at this point, advancing Lucky to consolation quarter-finals.
Next it fought famed 4-time Robogames champion Sewer Snake. At the start, Sewer Snake tried to lift the rookie but missed. After some maneuvers, Lucky managed to flip Sewer Snake. From this point on, Lucky managed to stay on top as it was executing frequent flips and Sewer Snake could only use the lifter to save itself. As a result, Lucky won the judges’ decision and marched into the consolation semi-finals, only to meet even bigger threat - 7-time (and defending) Robogames champ, Original Sin.
The fight with Original Sin looked like it was very even, but the champ was in control most of the time as it slammed Lucky repeatedly and all flips were literally harmless for it. Original Sin asserted its dominance further towards the end of the duel as it slammed Lucky around, with the latter stopping its attempts to flip due to higher ground clearance. Lucky lost this fight on judges’ decision.
This sent Lucky into losers’ bracket against Team Food Fight's vertical spinner Cataclysm, also known as Cat King in King of Bots. Battle started badly for Lucky as it was sent flying high into the air in a rain of sparks. Lucky landed right side up, but was promptly chased around by Cataclysm which scratched Lucky’s right side. Then it popped Lucky with another hit, causing Lucky’s front to land on the spinner, which stopped. Cataclysm retreated and spun its weapon back up, but it was too late to repair the mistake, as Lucky rammed Cataclysm into the corner before putting its left side on the wall. Cataclysm was counted out as Lucky sealed its comeback KO.
Lucky’s next fight was against drum spinner of Touro Maximus. The fight was pretty even all the way with Lucky sending Touro Maximus flying with frequent flips and the latter avenging by throwing sparks off Lucky. However, judges awarded the win to Touro Maximus, perhaps because Lucky had more visible damage. As a result, the latter was eliminated from the tournament in 4th place.
RoboGames 2023[]
Ziggy Jr. would face Whomper upon its return to the RoboGames arena. The fight started out well for Ziggy Jr., getting around to the side of Whomper and shoving it into the wall before Whomper reversed its fortune and slammed Ziggy Jr. into the wall and attempted to lift it over, but failed. After some repositioning, Whomper managed to flip Ziggy Jr. onto its side, forcing it to self-right off of the wall. Ziggy Jr. answered this by landing several shots with its flipping arm, but failing to get Whomper completely over. Ziggy Jr. then finally managed to flip Whomper over and force it to self-right. While Whomper was busy, Ziggy Jr. did not let up, but once Whomper was righted, the fight came to a standstill as both bots tried to out-push the other. After a lot of shoving, Whomper managed to sneak in one more lift attempt, but failed, and decided to clamp down on Ziggy Jr. instead. After this final push ended, the fight would go to the judges where Ziggy Jr. would barely win 17-16 and advance to face RoboGames veteran, Crash n' Burn.
Fortunately for Ziggy Jr., Crash n' Burn were not permitted to use their flamethrowers after a ruling by the resident fire marshal. But this did not deter the clusterbot. The fight started with Ziggy Jr. taking Crash into the corner and flipping it against the wall. Crash landed upright and Burn got in behind Ziggy Jr. and pulled it back. Crash n' Burn then chased Ziggy Jr. across the arena before Ziggy Jr. turned around and acted as a ramp, causing Burn to flip itself over. With Burn down, but not out, Crash picked up the slack and slammed Ziggy Jr. into the wall. Crash then tried to carry Ziggy Jr. across the arena, but Ziggy Jr. spun itself off and countered this by almost flipping Crash out of the arena. Crash somehow survived this and landed inverted. Ziggy Jr. then rammed Crash into the corner and sent it flying into the glass several times. Burn used Ziggy Jr. to self right, and the two chased down Ziggy Jr.. Crash n' Burn would try and mount a final push, but Ziggy Jr. was ready for them and mercilessly bullied the clusterbot around the arena, even throwing Burn into the arena ceiling as the fight ended. The fight went to the judges who awarded Ziggy Jr. the victory.
Ziggy Jr.'s next fight was against Cataclysm. Ziggy Jr. lost this fight and was demoted to the loser's bracket.
Ziggy Jr. would then face Original Sin. Ziggy Jr. won this fight and advanced.
